ROYSTON TURQUOISE
The Royston mine is located in the historic Royston Mining District near Tonopah, Nevada. It was founded in 1902 by a modern settler Lee F. Hand.
The Royston district originally comprised four claims, Royal Blue, Bunker Hill, Oscar Wehrend and Easter Blue. At one point in history Royal Blue was associated with Tiffany & Co.
The Otteson family began leasing and mining claims in this district in the 1940’s. Today the Otteson family primarily controls and operates the remaining active claims in the Royston District. It is one of the few legacy American Turquoise districts still actively producing.
I purchase the majority of the Royston turquoise directly from the Otteson family. I have built relationships with several of the family members over the years that I have been collecting and using this turquoise for my jewelry.
Royston typically has a beautiful brown matrix but high grade can be from a deep sky blue to rich forest greens.
I particularly love to use copper and silver with Royston because the copper accentuates the beautiful brown matrix.
